FG speaks on nationwide power outage

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that electricity supply will be rapidly restored following the recent drop caused by a temporary shortfall in power generation.

The situation is expected to normalise within 24 to 48 hours.

Adelabu spoke during a meeting with key power sector stakeholders, including the National Independent System Operator (NISO), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), power generation companies (GENCOs), and distribution companies (DISCOs).

He highlighted the urgency of restoring gas supply and increasing power generation, especially with higher electricity demand during the Yuletide season.

The drop in supply followed an explosion on the Escravos-Lagos Gas Pipeline (ELP) and acts of vandalism on critical gas infrastructure, disrupting gas supply to several thermal power plants.

NISO confirmed the explosion caused a significant reduction in electricity generation nationwide, but restoration works are nearing completion, and full operations are expected to resume within 24 to 48 hours.

Minister Adelabu said preliminary investigations show that pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta region contributed to the gas shortage. He reassured Nigerians that the Federal Government is working around the clock to resolve the issue.

“We understand the frustration this has caused Nigerians. The disruption is temporary, and we are committed to restoring normal electricity supply,” Adelabu stated.

The Minister also emphasised long-term measures to diversify Nigeria’s energy mix, strengthen the national grid, and deploy advanced surveillance to protect critical infrastructure.

He appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around power and gas facilities.

Adelabu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing stable, reliable, and sustainable electricity across the country, assuring Nigerians that the temporary setback would not derail these objectives.
