Fake Overzealous Policeman in Uniform Arrested for Harassing Commuters, Others

A 33-year-old man, Nasiru Shitu, is in police custody after being arrested for allegedly impersonating a police officer and illegally controlling traffic on major roads in Kano metropolis, causing alarm and harm to citizens

The arrest, confirmed by the Kano State Police Command on Monday, has brought relief to many commuters who had encountered the fake officer.

Shitu, a resident of Unguwar Kofar Waika, was apprehended following numerous complaints from the public about individuals posing as law enforcement agents.

The state police public relations officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, ordered a full-scale investigation and surveillance of areas where the illegal activity was reported.

After receiving complaints from the public, the Kano State Police Commissioner ordered a full investigation into the issue and monitoring of the alleged places where such illegal practice is being conducted,” SP Kiyawa said.

For daily road users, the revelation confirmed their suspicions.

Several commuters shared their unsettling experiences with the impersonator.

I saw him some weeks ago along kofar Dawanau, but his mannerisms were aggressive, unlike the regular police officers. He was shouting at us erratically.

I felt something was off, but you don’t want to disobey someone you think is a policeman.

I was scared, so I just did what he said and drove off quickly. I am so happy when I was told he was busted,” said Hamisu Musa, a motorist.

Another commuter, Sabiu Usman, a commercial bus driver, expressed frustration.

This man has been causing confusion. One day, he would stop you for no reason, and when you try to ask why, he becomes threatening.

For everyone who knows this man knew that he was not only directing traffic but was also harassing people. Seriously, it is a good news that he has been caught. It makes our movement safer,” he added.

According to police findings, Shitu has confessed to the crime. During interrogation, he allegedly stated that his actions were driven by a love for the police uniform and admitted to being a drug user. This, he claimed, pushed him to wear the uniform and fake authority.
