FAAN to shut down MMIA terminal one for rehabilitation in March
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to shut down terminal one at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos for infrastructure upgrades.
The FAAN said the planned shutdown, expected in a month, is for the facility’s rehabilitation and expansion.
The authority spoke on the move while responding to reports of a power outage at the airport terminal on Saturday.
In a post on X on Sunday, the agency acknowledged the incident, saying it was caused by a fault in the changeover circuit.
The organisation said while measures were taken to restore power, a permanent backup equipment is not feasible due to the rehabilitation.
“Our teams took immediate action to bridge the gap and transfer supply to the secondary grid, and interim backup measures were activated to restore services as quickly as possible,” the FAAN wrote.
“We apologise to all passengers and stakeholders affected by the disruption and any discomfort it caused. While we continue to implement measures to mitigate such events, Terminal 1 has long‑standing infrastructure limitations.
“As we prepare to shut down Terminal 1 in one month as part of the MMIA Rehabilitation and Expansion Project, it is not feasible to install permanent new or additional backup equipment at this time.”
FAAN appreciated passengers and stakeholders for their patience as it transitions “from stop‑gap solutions to lasting improvements”.
The authority also reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a safer and more reliable passenger experience.
Power outages at the international airport are not new. In 2024, the FAAN confirmed a blackout that left passengers stranded at the facility.
Multiple incidents had occurred in 2026 and 2018.
On August 1, 2025, the federal executive council (FEC) approved contracts worth over N900 billion for infrastructure upgrades in the country’s aviation sector.
Announcing the approval, Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation and aerospace development, said the centrepiece of the approvals is the full rehabilitation, upgrade, and modernisation of terminal one of the MMIA, Lagos.
FAAN, on September 4, 2025, announced that reconstruction works had commenced at the airport.
