FAAN Bans Cash Transactions at Nigerian Airports from February 28, 2026
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced a sweeping nationwide ban on all cash transactions across airports in the country, effective February 28, 2026. The directive mandates the use of electronic payment channels for every airport service as part of efforts to align with the Federal Government’s cashless policy and strengthen transparency in revenue collection.
With this new policy, payments for car park fees, access gate charges, VIP and executive lounges, toll points, and other airport-related services must now be made electronically. From the effective date, no physical cash will be accepted at FAAN-managed airports.
The move is designed to promote accountability, reduce revenue leakages associated with cash handling, enhance security within airport environments, and support Nigeria’s growing digital economy. FAAN believes the transition will improve operational efficiency while offering safer and more convenient payment options for travelers and airport users.
Passengers are advised to come prepared with debit or credit cards, mobile banking apps, POS payment options, or approved electronic transfer platforms to avoid inconvenience. Airport authorities are expected to deploy additional digital infrastructure to ensure a smooth and seamless transition ahead of the deadline.
Airport businesses, concessionaires, and lounge operators are also required to comply fully with the new directive. Failure to implement approved electronic payment systems may attract penalties or service disruptions.
Major airports including Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport will operate strictly within this digital framework as the aviation sector moves toward full modernization.
As February 28 approaches, stakeholders and travelers are encouraged to prepare early to ensure a smooth shift to the cashless system across Nigeria’s airports.
