Electric Cables From Illegally Demolished Buildings In Oworonshoki Area Kill Lagos Teenager
According to a source who spoke to SaharaReporters, the latest incident occurred on Thursday, when a young person was electrocuted after coming into contact with the exposed cables in the community.
Another death has been recorded in Oworonshoki, Lagos State, following the continued presence of live electricity wires exposed after illegal demolition exercises ordered by the Oloworo of Oworonshoki Kingdom, Oba Saliu Babatunde, in November last year.
Residents told SaharaReporters that despite the demolition carried out several months ago, dangerous electric wires and cables were never removed or properly secured, turning the area into a death trap for unsuspecting residents.
According to a source who spoke to SaharaReporters, the latest incident occurred on Thursday, when a young person was electrocuted after coming into contact with the exposed cables in the community.
In a photograph obtained by SaharaReporters, the teenager was seen lying lifeless on the ground at the scene of the incident.
On November 25, 2025, SaharaReporters reported that two young girls were left stranded, crying, and visibly terrified after their home was allegedly set on fire by Nigerian police and local vigilantes, known as Madanwo, on the orders of Oba Saliu Babatunde, during a demolition and burning operation in the Oworonshoki area.
In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, the children, one still dressed in her school uniform and the other barefoot, had recounted how they were informed that their home had been burnt down while their parents were away at work.
“They called us from school. Before we even got here, they had already burned the house,” one of the girls said, struggling to hold back tears. “We were not allowed to pick anything. They burned everything.”
The emotional clip shows the girls standing amid chaos, pointing at smoke rising from the area where their home once stood.
Bystanders could be heard expressing outrage, alleging that houses were being set ablaze without giving residents a chance to salvage their belongings.
According to residents heard in the footage, police officers and Madanwo were reportedly involved in the operation.
The residents accused Oba Saliu Babatunde of Oworonshoki and government-backed groups of carrying out the burning despite claims that the government had ordered a halt to forced demolitions in the area.
“What is happening in Oworonshoki now is heartbreaking,” a voice in the video had said. “People are at work, children are in school, and they are burning houses. Families have nothing left.”
Residents also explained that some people had been arrested in earlier clashes and had remained in detention without release.
