Ekiti Teacher Whose Two Kidneys Were Illegally Removed In Teaching Hospital Appeals For Help
This followed a routine surgery after a road accident, leaving him in chronic pain and dependent on regular dialysis.
A39-year-old teacher, Joshua Afolayan, has lamented how a doctor at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital removed his both kidneys without consent.

Afolayan, who works with the Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission, told PUNCH that he was admitted to the hospital after an accident in August 2025.
Initially, only his damaged right kidney was to be removed, with the left kidney functioning normally. The alleged removal of both kidneys, he claims, has caused severe health deterioration.
A panel has reportedly been set up by the Ekiti State Government to investigate the matter, but Afolayan says the hospital has yet to offer proper care, leaving him without intensive support despite his critical condition.
“I had an accident on my way from work, so I was taken to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital for treatment. The whole scenario started when I did about four scans, and it was discovered that one of my kidneys was not functioning, and it had to be removed.
“We all agreed that it should be removed because I had undergone a lot of tests, and we were able to confirm the other kidney was good. That was what led to the surgery.
“It was a nephrectomy, which was the removal of the kidney that was not good. My right kidney was not good, but the left kidney was functioning 100 per cent, so they wanted to remove the right one that was not functioning.
“We did two scans after the surgery, but they did not release any of the results to us. That alone raised suspicion, before we eventually discovered that there was no kidney in my body anymore.
“They changed it to say that I was having a horseshoe kidney, which means that the kidneys were joined together. We did scans before the surgery, and none of them showed that the kidneys were joined together.
“They were confused, and later they said it was a horseshoe kidney. That was when I went on social media to talk about it, and after that, a panel was set up last Monday, December 8, 2025.
“I want to live like others; I want to be able to eat, drink, urinate, go to bed and sleep like others. I’m 39 years old. I have a wife and three children, and I want to be able to take care of them.”
Afolayan alleged that despite the severity of his condition, the hospital has provided only free dialysis, and he has received no intensive care. He has appealed to the state government for urgent intervention, warning that the ongoing inaction could be life-threatening.
