DSS Alerts Kwara Police Over Imminent Terror Attack Threat On Kwara Community By Suspected Mamuda Terrorists Group

Ilorin, Kwara State– The Department of State Services (DSS) has alerted the Kwara State Police Command over a possible terror attack on Gbabe community in Gwanara District of Baruten Local Government Area, following intelligence reports indicating a build-up of armed men suspected to be members of the Mamuda terrorist group.
A confidential security alert dated February 5, 2026, and addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, was obtained by Afrika Eyes.
The letter, referenced S.122/1/1897, was signed by J.S. Adams, for the State Director of Security, DSS Kwara Command.

According to the document, the DSS warned that the threat is linked to the presence and movements of armed elements around Kiyoru Settlement, an area close to the Kainji Lake National Park (KLNP), a region that has, in recent years, become notorious for the activities of armed groups and terrorists exploiting its vast forest cover.
The DSS letter stated in clear terms that intelligence reports point to a potential attack on the rural community if urgent security measures are not put in place.
“Report indicates possible threat of attack by armed group, on Gbabe Community, Gwanara District, Baruten Local Government Area (LGA), Kwara State,” the letter read.
It further explained that the threat “stemmed from the build-up of armed men suspected to be Mamuda elements around Kiyoru Settlement, even as the villagers have expressed hostility at the display and presence of the elements.”
The DSS specifically warned that the history of violent activities associated with armed groups in the KLNP axis makes the intelligence particularly concerning.
“In view of the antecedents of armed groups around Kainji Lake National Park (KLNP), there is need to emplace necessary security measures, to forestall any untoward development,” the letter added.
The agency urged the Commissioner of Police to act swiftly to prevent a breakdown of law and order and possible loss of lives and property in the affected community.
“Respectfully forwarded for your attention and necessary action, please,” the DSS concluded in the memo.
Baruten Local Government Area, located in Kwara North and sharing borders with Niger Republic and Benin Republic, has increasingly come under security scrutiny due to its proximity to forested areas believed to serve as hideouts for armed groups, bandits, and terror cells fleeing military pressure in the North-West and North-Central regions.
Afrika Eyes previously reported that dozens of people have been gruesomely massacred following a deadly invasion of Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State by suspected Sahel-backed terrorists, leaving the Emir of Woro, Alhaji Saliu Bio Umar, missing, while his palace was razed to the ground.
Afrika Eyes gathered that the attackers are allegedly linked to a Sadiku-led Boko Haram faction operating across parts of the North Central and Sahel regions.
Meanwhile, the heavily armed terrorists stormed Woro community on Tuesday evening, unleashing coordinated attacks on residents and homes.
More than 160 people were reportedly killed during the onslaught, including two wives of the Emir, several of his children, the Chief Imam of Woro, a school principal, and a headmistress.
Students who had just returned home from school were not spared, as many were allegedly killed in their homes and on the streets.
Residents said the attackers went from house to house, shooting indiscriminately and slaughtering victims at close range. Some victims were reportedly killed with machetes, while others had their throats slit.
Afrika Eyes confirmed that the monarch’s official vehicle was seized by the assailants and allegedly used to transport some abducted victims to unknown locations.
In a disturbing video obtained by Afrika Eyes , voices could be heard in the background lamenting the destruction, with one person saying the terrorists had set the Emir’s palace on fire.
Several lifeless bodies were seen lying on the ground, some in pools of blood, as smoke billowed from burning structures.
Eyewitnesses also revealed that travellers and passersby moving through the area to other destinations were ambushed and killed without provocation.
It was further gathered that the terrorists, suspected to be Fulani extremists, returned to the community on Wednesday morning after the initial Tuesday night attack, killing several more residents who had survived the first wave.
Some individuals who had travelled from Ilorin to Woro for farming and trading activities were also caught in the violence and killed. Survivors said the attackers appeared determined to wipe out as many people as possible.
The attack has been linked to earlier tensions between Woro community and the Sadiku-led Boko Haram faction. Months ago, the group allegedly attempted to force residents to attend extremist sermons and adopt their radical teachings.
Sources said the Emir had openly resisted the group’s activities and refused to cooperate with their demands.
He was also said to have reported the group to Nigerian military authorities, alerting them to allegations of coercion, forced preaching, and growing militant presence in the area.
Following the Emir’s refusal to submit, the terrorusts allegedly planned and executed the large-scale assault on the community as retaliation.
It was confirmed that military personnel responded to distress calls from the community during the attack.
However, they were reportedly forced to carry out a tactical retreat due to the overwhelming number of attackers, estimated to be more than 200 fighters.
Residents have since fled Woro community in large numbers, seeking refuge in neighbouring towns and villages amid fears of further attacks.
