Don’t Let Trump Use Christianity to Divide Nigeria

The ongoing tension between the United States and Nigeria is not about religion — it is about power, politics, and influence. Nigerians, especially Christians, must not fall for the deception being peddled in the name of faith.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s sudden concern for Nigerian Christians is not born out of compassion or divine calling. It is a calculated political maneuver — one that began when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration stood up to Washington’s economic intimidation.

It all started when the Tinubu government responded to the 15% tariff imposed by the U.S. on Nigerian imports with a reciprocal 15% tariff on American crude oil.
This bold step — a defense of Nigeria’s economic sovereignty — didn’t sit well with Washington, especially with Trump and his allies who continue to see Africa as a market for exploitation rather than a partner in progress.

In retaliation, Trump’s camp has begun using religion as a weapon, framing Nigeria as a nation that persecutes Christians — a false and dangerous narrative recycled repeatedly to justify Western interference in African affairs.

Let’s be clear: Trump is not fighting for Christians.
He is fighting for control, dominance, and political influence.

By painting Nigeria as hostile to Christians, Trump seeks to appeal to his conservative base in the United States, stir emotions, and build momentum for his political comeback.
Unfortunately, this strategy puts Nigeria’s unity and sovereignty at risk. Religion has always been a sensitive issue in Nigeria, and when outsiders exploit it, they do not seek peace — they seek division.
