Doctor gets a heart attack and dies on duty

…because there was no cath lab at the hospital to save him

Dr. Kwame Adu Ofori, a 47-year-old emergency physician at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, has passed away after suffering a heart attack—an outcome many believe could have been avoided.

Despite dedicating his entire life to saving others, Dr. Ofori was failed by the very health system he served.

He s,uffered a myocardial infarction—a heart attack caused by a blocked artery that restricts blood flow to the heart.

The urgent medical solution required was a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), a procedure to quickly open the blocked vessel and restore circulation.

However, neither KATH nor any medical facility in Kumasi had a catheterization lab (cath lab) capable of performing the intervention.

With time running out, efforts were made to transfer him to Accra for the procedure, but sadly, he di.ed before he could receive treatment.
