The General Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), High Chief Peter Ameh, has taken a swipe at the Enugu and Bayelsa State Governors over their recent defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as an act of fear and political survival rather than genuine service to the people.
Ameh, who is also a former National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), said the defections would not guarantee electoral victory in 2027, arguing that Nigerians have grown beyond party politics and now vote based on performance and integrity.
Speaking in Abuja, he said, “No defection can save a leader who has lost touch with his people. Those running to the ruling party are not seeking to serve, they are seeking protection.”
He maintained that the defections show “fear, not faith,” stressing that any governor who has truly served his people should not need to hide under the ruling party to secure his political future.
“If a leader is performing, his strength should come from the people’s trust, not from federal connections. Running to the APC shows fear of probes and loss of influence,” Ameh stated.
According to him, the people of Enugu and Bayelsa are politically aware and cannot be swayed by party switching or federal backing. He accused defecting politicians of undermining democracy by treating political parties as temporary shelters instead of platforms for governance and reform.
“These politicians are not seeking partnership with the people but protection from them. They jump ship instead of fixing the mess in their parties,” he added.
Ameh concluded that the 2027 general elections would be a test of performance and credibility, not party labels. “Nigerians are wiser now. They know leadership is about character, not convenience. Those who ignored the people will soon find out where the real power lies,” he said.
