Creation of New state Gains Momentum as Akpabio Declares Senate Backing Reveals Capital
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed strong legislative backing for the creation of Anioma State, declaring that the long-standing proposal is firmly on course.
Akpabio made the statement on Wednesday while addressing party faithful at the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Asaba, where he also expressed the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the initiative.
“Anioma state will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The Senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” Akpabio said.
He added that the proposed restructuring would see Warri emerge as the capital of a reconfigured Delta State, citing its strategic infrastructure.
“With Asaba as Anioma state capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta,” he stated.
The Senate President described the agitation for Anioma State as historically justified, noting that it reflects a long-standing demand anchored on equity, administrative efficiency, and balanced development.
“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities,” he said.
Akpabio further disclosed that the proposal remains a priority for the 10th Senate, stressing that its eventual realisation would bring significant socio-economic and governance benefits, including decentralisation and improved service delivery.
He also called for unity among stakeholders in the South-South region, urging continued support for the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The high-profile congress was attended by governors from across the region, including Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River states, alongside key political leaders and party stakeholders.
The Anioma State campaign, championed by Senator Nwoko, has continued to gain traction. In November 2025, the lawmaker revealed that 97 senators had endorsed the proposal, describing the level of legislative support as unprecedented, with backing also coming from constitutional amendment committees and the presidency.
