Court Strikes Out Baseless Case Against Comrade Idowu Afuye
In a landmark ruling that reaffirms the principles of democracy, accountability, and freedom of expression, a High Court today struck out the case instituted against activist and rights advocate, Comrade Idowu Afuye, by the Senator representing Ekiti North Senatorial District, Senator Cyril Fasuyi.
The case, which had lingered in the public space for months, stemmed from a simple democratic request made by Comrade Afuye. He had called on Senator Fasuyi to present his scorecard and record of performance since assuming office as the representative of Ekiti North. This request, which resonates with the spirit of accountability expected in a democracy, did not sit well with the senator.
Rather than providing answers to the legitimate demand of his constituents, Senator Fasuyi allegedly resorted to the use of state power by ordering the arrest of Comrade Afuye. The arrest sparked outrage among rights activists, civil society organizations, and members of the public, who described it as a clear case of intimidation and an attempt to silence the voice of the people.
However, justice was served today as the presiding judge dismissed the case, describing it as “baseless, lacking in evidence, and without merit.” The court further emphasized that demanding accountability from elected officials is not a crime, but rather a constitutional right of citizens in a representative democracy.
Comrade Afuye, reacting to the judgment, expressed gratitude to God, the judiciary, and the people who stood by him throughout the ordeal. He reiterated his commitment to continue speaking truth to power, holding leaders accountable, and ensuring that democracy in Ekiti State and Nigeria at large thrives on the pillars of transparency and responsibility.
The court’s decision has been widely celebrated as a victory for democracy and free speech. Observers note that the ruling not only vindicates Comrade Afuye but also serves as a reminder to public office holders that the mandate they carry is a trust from the people, and accountability is non-negotiable.
As the news spreads, many stakeholders have commended the judiciary for upholding justice, warning against the misuse of political influence to suppress critics.
Today’s ruling marks a turning point proving that no amount of intimidation can erase the truth, and that in a democracy, the voice of the people must always be heard.
