Court halts Lagos govt demolition in Oworonshoki, issues seven-day injunction
The High Court of Lagos State sitting in Ikeja has granted an interim injunction stopping the Lagos State Government and its agencies from carrying out further demolitions in parts of Oworonshoki, located within the Kosofe Local Government Area.
The order was issued by Justice L.A.M. Folami on Friday, following an application brought by four residents: Adeyemi Badejoko, Sheikh Tajudeen Omotayo Murobiu, Ayanboye Temitope, and Afolarin Olugbemiga John, acting for the Community Development Association, CDA, and residents of Olabode Aluko Street, Iye-Ekiti Close, and Church Street.
The suit, marked ID/10049GCMW/2025, lists the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, His Royal Majesty Oba Babunde Saliu, and the Lagos State Government as defendants.
According to documents before the court, the application, dated November 7 and filed on November 10, was supported by an affidavit sworn to by Badejoko, a businessman and community representative.
The applicants’ counsel, O. Ajanaku, moved the motion alongside a written address.
In its ruling, the court restrained the defendants and their agents, officers, servants, privies, or any persons acting on their behalf from entering, demolishing, interfering with, or otherwise disturbing the applicants’ possession, occupation, and ownership of their properties in the affected areas.
Justice Folami ordered that the interim injunction remain in effect for seven days pending the filing and service of the substantive suit.
The court also directed the four applicants to execute an undertaking of N10 million, to indemnify the defendants should the injunction be found to have been improperly granted.
The order, signed and sealed by the presiding judge on November 16, 2025, was certified by the court’s Legal Registrar, Otitiosa Okoye.
The ruling comes amid heightened tension in Oworonshoki following a wave of recent demolitions reportedly carried out by LASBCA and other state agencies.
Several residents have claimed that some of the affected structures are long-standing family homes, alleging inadequate notice, insufficient consultation, and concerns over forced eviction.
