Casemiro wanted to announce his impending departure from United – which the club agreed to – but sources insist that they had decided not to extend his stay well in advance of the announcement.
The 33-year-old wanted to provide clarity on his future and avoid any speculation that he could somehow remain at United for another year.
He said: “I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life.
“From the first day that I walked out at this beautiful stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford and the love that I now share with our supporters for this special club.
“It is not time to say goodbye; there are many more memories to create during the next four months.
“We still have a lot to fight for together; my complete focus will, as always, remain on giving my everything to help our club to succeed.”
Casemiro, who was one of the first signings of the ill-fated Ten Hag era, admits now is the time to move on to pastures new.
He wrote on Instagram: “Knowing when stages come to an end.
“Knowing when to say goodbye when you feel that you will be remembered and respected forever.
“Four months to give my all for this badge and for our goal.
“Eternal respect and affection for Manchester United and its wonderful fans. Forever Red Devil.”
Casemiro’s inevitable departure will free up funds for United to make a major midfield addition.
The Brazil international is one of United’s highest earners on around £300,000 a week.
United are monitoring England trio Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Alex Scott, as well as Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba –
The club’s principal target in the summer transfer window is a No.6.
Casemiro, who turns 34 next month, joined United from Real Madrid in a £70million deal in August 2022.
After an influential first season in which he scored the winner in the League Cup final, Casemiro endured a forgettable second season and was dropped for the 2024 FA Cup final by Erik ten Hag.
The Old Trafford faithful were quick to thank the 82-cap Brazil international for his service.
I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life.”
