Boko Haram Now Using Drones in Attacks, Zulum Raises Alarm

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has sounded a serious warning over Boko Haram’s growing technological capability after the terrorist group allegedly used drones to attack a military base in Mafa Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, Zulum described the development as a “dangerous escalation” and urged the Federal Government to urgently review and strengthen Nigeria’s air safety and defence systems to prevent further breaches.

“One thing I want to comment on is the issue of drones. This is frightening. In Dikwa, I was told drones were used. The proliferation of drones, particularly in the hands of non-state actors, is of great concern for the entire country,” Zulum said.

The governor warned that the insurgents’ successful use of drones exposes a major weakness in Nigeria’s airspace security, adding that the nation must reinforce its borders and surveillance systems.

“This is not an issue confined to Borno alone. Our borders and airspace must be reinforced immediately,” he added.

While commending the Nigerian Armed Forces for their relentless efforts, Zulum called on residents to support security agencies by providing credible intelligence and staying alert.

He also revealed that intelligence reports had earlier warned of a possible attack on Mafa, stressing the need for better coordination between the state government, military, and federal authorities.

“I believe there might be sabotage within that has to be identified and addressed. We don’t have to blame each other; we must come together and resolve this situation,” the governor said.
