Bandits Attack Kwara Community, Kill One Resident, Kidnap Two
The attack, which reportedly occurred on December 27, 2024, comes barely two weeks after two kidnapped residents of the same community were released following ransom payments, locals told SaharaReporters on Sunday.
Residents of Owa Onire in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State have raised the alarm over what they describe as a worsening security crisis after armed bandits attacked the community on Saturday night, killing one person, injuring several others and abducting two others.
The attack, which reportedly occurred on December 27, 2024, comes barely two weeks after two kidnapped residents of the same community were released following ransom payments, locals told SaharaReporters on Sunday.
One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, said the attacks in the community have failed to attract media attention because of its small size.
“Last night, armed bandits invaded our town, resulting in the killing of one person and multiple injuries, Two residents were kidnapped,” the resident said.
“This attack comes barely two weeks after the release of two previous kidnapping victims who were freed only after ransom payment. Due to the small size of our community, these incidents are not receiving the media attention needed to pressure authorities into action.”
“The perpetrators are becoming increasingly emboldened by the lack of security response and public awareness,” the source said.
SaharaReporters learnt that the insecurity extends beyond the town itself. Contractors working on the Oke Onigbin–Owu Falls Road project were also reportedly abducted recently along the route shortly after passing Oba Isin, on their way toward Owa Onire.
Residents say the silence from security agencies and the Kwara State government has emboldened criminal gangs, who now launch attacks with increasing confidence.
As of press time, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, had not responded to SaharaReporters’ requests for comment. Calls to her phone went unanswered, and a message sent to her remained unreplied.
