Bandits Abduct  Electoral Commissioner, Ex-SUBEB Chair, and Dozens of Travellers

Bandits have kidnapped Ahmed Mohammed, widely recognized as Barrister Ahmed Lawyer, who serves as a Commissioner with the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission. Alongside him, his driver and former SUBEB Chairman Mohammed Bawa Niworu were also taken captive along with numerous motorists.

The event took place in the early hours of Monday, September 29, on Zugurma-Ibbi–New Bussa Road near Ibbi National Park within Mashegu Local Government Area.

According to a source, the victims were on their way back from Borgu when they were attacked by gunmen. “Later, their vehicle was discovered abandoned along the roadside with their mobile phones still inside,” the source reported.

Reports indicate that the bandits set up a blockade on the highway just before a police checkpoint, and subsequently ambushed travelers along the Ibbi-Bussa route.

A police tactical team confronted the attackers and successfully drove them back. However, one officer was injured by gunfire and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to a commercial driver operating on the route, bandits seized at least three Sharon buses filled with passengers and drove them away to undisclosed locations.

Niger State Police Command spokesman, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident by stating that a police patrol vehicle had been struck multiple times with bullets during the confrontation.

SP Abiodun stated that the Police Command, in partnership with other security agencies and local vigilante groups, has deployed additional tactical teams to track down the kidnappers. Their goal is to rescue the victims and arrest those responsible.

Authorities are persistently investigating as efforts continue to ensure the safe release of those who were abducted.
