APC Youth Leader Urges Chairman To Stop Salaries Of Civil Servants Supporting Opposition ADC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Leader in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, Ibrahim Yusuf Kodondo, has urged the council chairman, Jibrin Muregi, to use his influence to stop the salaries of civil servants working for the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Kodondo made the call during the APC campaign rally in Mokwa ahead of the November 1 local government election in Niger State.
The election, organised by the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC), will see voters across the 25 local government areas elect new chairmen and councillors.
He accused some council staff members of betraying the ruling party by holding political positions in the opposition, urging disciplinary action to maintain loyalty among government employees.
He said the chairman must use his authority in collaboration with the member representing Mokwa constituency in the Niger State House of Assembly to deal decisively with such cases.
“Government is large enough to accommodate a lot of interests. Mr Chairman, sir, you are still the sitting chairman. We can’t be a threat and allow ourselves to be threatened by some people. We want you to use your powers together with (Mokwa) state assembly member,” Kodondo said.
The youth leader alleged that some local government workers have taken up leadership roles within the ADC despite still drawing salaries from the government.
“Some of your civil servants accepted the role of ward chairman of ADC. I want you to investigate that, and ensure that any of your civil servants who joined the ADC should have their salaries stopped,” he declared.
The Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) has scheduled the local government election for November 1, 2025, to elect new chairpersons and councillors across the 25 local government areas. The exercise will mark the first council poll under Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s administration since assuming office in 2023.
Political activities have intensified across the state, with major parties including the APC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Social Democratic Party (SDP) holding rallies and consultations.
The ruling APC is seeking to retain control of all 25 local councils, a feat it achieved in the last local government elections held in 2019.
Meanwhile, controversy continues to trail the APC chairmanship ticket in Mokwa. Several party members recently protested what they described as the “imposition of Jibrin Muregi as the party flagbearer,” while another aspirant, Ibrahim Bukar Usman, was said to have emerged as a consensus candidate.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is not directly involved in the local government polls, as state electoral commissions are constitutionally empowered to conduct such elections.
NSIEC has, however, pledged to ensure transparency and fairness in the forthcoming exercise.
