APC Raises Alarm Over Osun Governor Adeleke’s Whereabouts As Govt Says He’s In US For Davido’s Wedding
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, the party described the governor’s prolonged absence as “abnormal,” questioning the transparency and legality of the development.
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed concerns over the whereabouts of Governor Ademola Adeleke, alleging that he left the state without proper notice and has been absent for more than two weeks.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, the party described the governor’s prolonged absence as “abnormal,” questioning the transparency and legality of the development.
“The question being asked in hushed tones in some public places, inside commercial buses and by motorcycle riders and their passengers in the state, is where could be the whereabouts of their governor for this long,” the statement read.
The party demanded clarity on who is currently in charge of governance in Osun during Adeleke’s absence.
It said, “As the governor of all and sundry, we as a party, need to know the whereabouts of the governor and who has been holding fort for him during his absence from the state since two weeks ago.
“Did the governor duly transmit power to his deputy who is constitutionally covered to temporarily step into the shoes of his principal in his absence?”
The APC further alleged that Governor Adeleke left the state shortly after an unsuccessful attempt to defect to the party.
“Our check has confirmed that Governor Adeleke left the state unannounced about two weeks ago, when he failed in his effort to defect to the opposition APC,” it claimed.
In response, the state government dismissed the allegations and confirmed that the governor is currently in the United States for the wedding of his nephew, singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.
Governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, in a statement responding to the APC’s inquiry, confirmed the trip and extended an unusual invitation to the opposition to join the family celebration.
“Governor Adeleke left Nigeria for the United States via the family private jet a few days ago for the wedding of the global music icon, his beloved nephew, David Adeleke,” Rasheed stated.
“His Excellency is extending an invitation to the opposition party to attend the event and share in the joy of the occasion with the Adeleke family. Those unable to attend may join virtually.”
He noted that Governor Adeleke had not taken any official vacation since assuming office in November 2022, and that the current trip was a brief one.
“For this current trip, the Governor has again chosen to make it a short one to continually attend to crucial state functions,” he said.
Rasheed also assured the public that governance had not been disrupted, adding that Adeleke remains in close touch with his deputy.
“Meanwhile, the Governor is in constant communication with his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi who is supervising activities of the government,” the statement concluded.
As the back-and-forth between the APC and the state government unfolds, the controversy continues to fuel debates.
