APC Defeats NNPP In Kano Re-Run Poll, Wins Edo Central Senatorial By-Election
The Returning Officer, Professor Muhammad Waziri of Bayero University, announced on Sunday that Gwarmai won with 31,472 votes, defeating his closest rival, Yusuf Maigado of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who scored 27,931 votes.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Garba Gwarmai, has been declared the winner of the Ghari/Tsanyawa supplementary election in Kano State.
The Returning Officer, Professor Muhammad Waziri of Bayero University, announced on Sunday that Gwarmai won with 31,472 votes, defeating his closest rival, Yusuf Maigado of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who scored 27,931 votes.
The supplementary election followed the earlier inconclusive poll in the constituency.
With a winning margin of 3,541 votes, Gwarmai’s triumph delivers a significant boost to the APC, further consolidating the party’s dominance in Kano State.
In a related development, INEC also declared Joseph Ikpea of the APC as the winner of Saturday’s by-election for the Edo Central Senatorial District in Edo.
INEC Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Kingsley Omo-Iwoze, in the early hours of Sunday in Ubiaja, the administrative headquarters of Esan South-East Local Government Area, declared Ikpea as the winner of the polls with 105,129 votes.
He defeated his closest rival, Joe Okojie of the Peoples Democratic Party, who scored 15,146 votes.
“This is the declaration. I, Prof. Omo-Iwoze, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the 2025 Edo Central Senatorial District bye election, held on the 16th day of August, 2024.
“That Ikpea Joseph of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared winner of the election,” Omo-Iwoze said.
Speaking shortly after his declaration, the Senator-elect dedicated his victory to God and the people of the district, whom he said have chosen vision over sentiment, progress over politics-as-usual.
He promised to prioritise legislation and interventions in the areas of infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and the strengthening of traditional institutions.
INEC had declared vacant the Edo Central Senatorial seat following the election of the former occupier, Monday Okpebholo, as the governor of the state.
