AFUED staff trains on ethical principles in workplace
Staff in the Bursary Department, Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED) Ondo, have undergone a one-day training Programme which held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 in the institution.
Speaking on the occasion, the AFUED University Bursar, Mrs. Taiwo Adedoyin, stated that the training was organised for the purpose of training and re-training of workers in the department, in order to keep them informed of current trends in Accounting practices and ethical principles in accordance with global standards.
Adedoyin reminded the trainees on the need to abide with ethical principles, especially confidentiality, which she said is very key in Accounting.
According to her, “Staff in the Bursary department, who are privileged to have access to information, should be careful in divulging such information especially when it has to do with sensitive records, in order not to betray the trust repose in them”.
She said: “Confidentiality is very key in Accounting. As custodian of sensitive records, you must be careful about the kind of things you say and how you say it”.
On the issue bordering on Integrity, the AFUED Bursar, advised the participants to exhibit integrity in the discharge of their duties, stating that through that, they would gain people’s confidence and trust.
In addition, Adedoyin also emphasized the need for the trainees to dress neatly at all times, noting that the move would boost their image and that of the University.
Earlier in an address of welcome, the Chairman Bursary Training Committee, AFUED, Ondo, Mrs. T.O. Aturu, explained that the training exercise, which is the second edition to be organised in the department, was aimed at complementing the first edition held for the staff.
She advised the participants to make judicious use of knowledge acquired during the training, and expressed optimism, that they would acquired additional knowledge, which would be beneficial to them and enhance their efficiency in their various places of assignments after the exercise.
In a paper presented on the occasion by the immediate past Bursar and current Director, Investment and Grant AFUED, Ondo, Mr. Abdul Ganiyu Olaniyi (FCA), he emphasized the need for the participants to always act in line with core ethical principles that guides their operations in the University.
Speaking on: “Core Ethical Principles in a Workplace”, the renowned Accountant, defines ethics as a system of moral principles that governs an individual’s behaviour, or the conduct of an activity, stating that ethical principles, act as a compass that guides employees, Management and organisations in making sound decisions in the work place.
Underscoring importance of ethics in Accounting profession, Abdul said “It is very important and more critical, because Accountants, serve as custodians of financial integrity”.
He spoke on what he listed as core ethical principles in workplace to include integrity, honesty, transparency, confidentiality, data protection, accountability and responsibility, as well as fairness and impartially, stating that compliance with these principles, would enhance achievement of organizational financial goals.
On issue pertaining to workplace relationship, the former AFUED Bursar emphasized the need for staff of the Bursary department to show respect for colleagues and superiors, engage in teamwork and collaborations, avoid conflict of interest, gossip and discrimination.
In addition, he equally enjoined the trainees to manage their time judiciously, exhibit punctuality, ensure judicious use of office resources, refrain from harassment and bullying of colleagues and junior officers, complying with appropriate dress code and professional appearance as well making effective and responsible use of technology.
The paper presenter also spoke extensively on decision relating to accounting profession, importance of Ethical principle in the workplace, as well as challenges in upholding ethics.
However, as a way tackling the challenges relating to uphold of ethics in work place, the renowned Accountant, urged Accountants practising in public and private organisations, to always exhibit integrity, objectivity, confidentiality and ensure strict compliance with ethics of their profession, saying the move would enable them maintain public trust, achieve organisational sustainability and boost individual’s professional and organizational reputation.
The event which held at the Bursary boardroom in the university was attended by Heads of different sections, as well senior and junior officers from the Bursary department.
