Abdulmumin Jibrin announces exit from NNPP after expulsion
Member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, has formally announced the end of his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), following what he described as his “sudden expulsion” from the party.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, Jibrin expressed shock at the decision, noting that his removal came after an interview he granted in English and Hausa. According to him, his remarks were in line with the principles of the NNPP, which, he argued, should encourage open and dissenting views.
“I strongly believe the contents of the interview… should not warrant such heavy penalty because it is in tandem with the core principles of our party and movement,” Jibrin stated. “For emphasis, I stand by all the statements I made.”
The lawmaker, who represents Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency of Kano State, criticized the party for failing to give him a fair hearing before taking disciplinary action. He argued that due process was ignored and compared the treatment to a violation of natural justice.
“Even under military dictatorship, an accused is subjected to a court martial,” he said. “Perhaps, if the appropriate processes were followed, the need for such harsh decision may not have arisen.”
While expressing his desire to have remained in the NNPP despite policy differences, Jibrin said he was left with no choice but to accept the party’s decision in good faith. He, however, appealed for an amicable separation without personal attacks.
On the issue of unpaid dues, Jibrin clarified that he never refused to meet his financial obligations to the party. He urged NNPP to send him an invoice, promising to settle his dues promptly.
The former NNPP chieftain also criticized what he called the party’s tendency to undervalue its members.
“The party does not believe anybody has political value and falls short in treating people with the respect they deserve,” he said. “I am grateful to Almighty Allah for whatever value I have and will be glad to invest it where it will be appreciated with dignity.”
Jibrin thanked the NNPP for the support he enjoyed during his time in the party and reiterated that he holds no grudges against those who choose to remain. He assured supporters that he will soon decide on his next political move.
“I will carefully weigh all the options before me as I decide on my next political home. So help me God,” he concluded.
Jibrin’s exit marks another high-profile defection from the NNPP, a party that has faced internal wrangling in recent months.
