A bandit’s life is treated as more valuable than a soldier — Military widow alleges as she mourns Brig. General Uba and others
A military wife has shared her deep pain and frustration over the k+lling of Brigadier Uba, questioning how Nigerian soldiers are treated, the lack of accountability in the system, and the government’s slow response to growing insecurity in the North-East.
She spoke about the many years her family sacrificed, believing her husband would one day complete his service and return home safely. According to her:
“I always believed that one day he would finish his 35 years in service and come back to me, and we would make up for all the birthdays and anniversaries we missed. Every night I slept alone and carried the whole responsibility, comforting myself with the hope that he would return and finally enjoy the benefits he worked for.”
She said Brig. Uba’s de+th shattered that hope and left her feeling that justice may never be done. She added:
“Now it feels like the idea of him serving endlessly has completely destroyed that hope, because he could miss every birthday for nothing, while a b@ndit’s life seems to be treated as more valuable than a soldier’s.”
The widow also expressed anger over what she sees as unfair treatment of soldiers, saying they are often punished even when acting to protect themselves. In her words:
“If a soldier fires a sh+t in the bush just to defend himself, he’ll still be charged, even the junior ones. It wasn’t only a man that d+ed — entire generations were affected, because those who depended on him lost him too.”
She questioned why the government has not taken stronger action in Maiduguri, especially when other regions received quick intervention:
“We’re acting like we need to lose everyone before we speak out. Port Harcourt was placed under a state of emergency on March 18 this year, so why hasn’t Maiduguri been given the same attention? We may not say everything online, but we see what is happening.”
