National Disgrace As Two Nigerian Police Teams Clash In Osun Community, Residents Panic Over Gunshots
The report stated that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), upon receiving the distress call, immediately led a team to the area to ascertain what had happened.
Panic gripped residents of Ajegunle area, Ifon-Osun, Osun State after two separate tactical teams of the Nigeria Police Force engaged in a confrontation and started “attacking themselves”.
Residents of Ajegunle area of Ifon, Osun State, were thrown into panic on Tuesday night after a gunshot was reportedly heard in the area, prompting the immediate deployment of the Divisional Police Command and other tactical teams.
According to a police situation report (SITREP) obtained by SaharaReporters, the incident occurred on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at about 9:45pm, after the Olufon Palace reportedly placed a distress call to the Ifon Police Division over the sound of a gunshot heard around Ajegunle, Ifon.
The report stated that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), upon receiving the distress call, immediately led a team to the area to ascertain what had happened.
However, upon arrival, the team reportedly encountered two separate tactical teams engaged in a confrontation and heated argument.
One of the teams was identified as the Anti-Robbery Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Osogbo, led by DSP Kolawole Wasiu and four other officers.
The second team was identified as a tactical team from Zone XI, led by Inspector Ola Isaac and four other officers.
The police report said the two teams were seen “attacking themselves” and arguing among themselves, an incident which reportedly generated fear and panic among residents in the area.
The report further stated that neither of the two tactical teams had reported their presence at the Ifon Police Division before the incident.
Concerned about the situation, the DPO reportedly contacted the Osun State Commissioner of Police and briefed him on the development.
Following the report, the Commissioner of Police ordered that the two tactical teams be disarmed and detained pending further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The order was immediately carried out, with the officers attached to the two teams reportedly disarmed and detained at the division.
The police report added that the senior police officers among those detained had also been directed to report to the division by 6am on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
The police said the development had caused panic within the Ajegunle area, following the reported gunshot and subsequent confrontation between the two tactical teams.
When contacted, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi Zechariah did not respond to calls.
In the past, inter-agency clashes and lack of coordination among police tactical units have repeatedly led to confusion and panic in communities across the country.
