The development was disclosed by conflict reporter Bakatsine in a post shared on his X handle on Friday morning.
According to the report, the armed attackers invaded Birjingo and carried out a deadly assault on residents before fleeing with several abducted victims.
Local sources further alleged that some of those killed were brutally beheaded, while others were taken hostage by the attackers.
The assailants also reportedly set a security vehicle on fire during the attack.
Meanwhile, SaharaReporters could not immediately ascertain the number of people killed or abducted in the incident, as the claims could not be independently verified. The Sokoto State Police spokesman, DSP Ahmed Rufai, could not be reached for comment as of press time.
The incident has reportedly heightened concerns over the security situation in parts of Sokoto State, where rural communities have continued to face attacks by armed groups.
The reported attack occurred shortly after a deadly boat accident in nearby Gorau, where more than 30 people were reportedly killed.
The combination of the boat tragedy and the latest bandit attack has reportedly deepened fear and grief among communities in the area.
Birjingo residents are now said to be living in fear following the latest assault, with concerns over the safety of those abducted and the possibility of further attacks.
The latest incident comes amid persistent concerns over banditry and kidnapping across parts of north-western Nigeria, where armed groups have targeted rural communities, travellers and farmers.
The attacks have resulted in killings, mass abductions, displacement of residents and disruption of farming and other economic activities.
“How many more innocent lives must be lost before these vulnerable communities receive the urgent protection they deserve?” Bakatsine asked in his post.
