Man Allegedly Hires Killers To Murder Friend, Cover Up Fraudulent Land Deal In Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested four suspects, including a friend of a 56-year-old man, Kelechi Madu, over his alleged murder in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Madu left home on the evening of August 17, 2026, but failed to return.
His wife subsequently reported his disappearance to the police on August 18, prompting police operatives, members of the local vigilante group and the deceased’s family to launch a search for him.
Ikenga said the search took a tragic turn later that day when the deceased’s wife returned to the police station and reported that her husband had been found dead in a nearby bush at Umuobi, Awkuzu.
“Police operatives immediately mobilized to the scene, where the deceased was found lying lifeless with a deep axe cut to his head,” the statement said.
The corpse was subsequently evacuated and deposited at a hospital for preservation.
The police said investigations led to the arrest of Madu’s 32-year-old friend, Ifeanyi Nwankwo, who allegedly confessed to his involvement in planning the murder.
“Mr Ifeanyi Nwankwo, a friend of the deceased, confessed to his involvement in the planning and killing of Mr Kelechi Madu,” Ikenga said.
Preliminary investigation, according to the command, revealed that Nwankwo allegedly obtained money from Madu fraudulently under the guise of helping him acquire a piece of land.
The suspect allegedly recruited two other persons to kill Madu in an attempt to conceal the alleged fraudulent transaction and prevent the deceased from recovering the money.
The police said two other suspects were arrested in connection with the alleged murder, while investigations are ongoing to identify other persons who may have been involved.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed that the investigation be intensified to apprehend all persons connected with the alleged conspiracy and murder.
“The Command is determined to ensure that every person connected to the crime is brought to justice,” Ikenga said.
The police spokesperson added that the command would continue to strengthen intelligence-led policing and community partnerships to prevent violent crimes and ensure that perpetrators face the law.
