Residents Raise Alarm as Scavengers Allegedly Break Bridge Pillars, remove Iron in Lagos

Residents in parts of Lagos have raised concerns over the alleged activities of scavengers, popularly known as Aboki, who are reportedly breaking sections of bridge pillars in an attempt to remove iron and other metal materials.

A video circulating online captured what appeared to be scavengers damaging parts of a bridge structure while attempting to extract metal from the pillars.

The development has sparked concern among residents, who fear that continued tampering with critical infrastructure could compromise public safety.
In the video, concerned residents could be heard calling for police intervention and urging security authorities to take immediate action against those allegedly responsible.

The residents expressed concern that bridge pillars are critical structural components, warning that deliberate damage to them for the purpose of retrieving scrap metal could have serious consequences if left unchecked.

They are therefore calling on the Lagos State Government, the police and other relevant authorities to investigate the incident, identify those involved and prevent further damage to bridges and other public infrastructure across the state.

The incident has also renewed calls for stronger regulation of scavenging activities in Lagos, particularly around bridges, railway infrastructure, drainage systems, electrical installations and other public facilities.

Residents believe that while legitimate recycling and scavenging activities provide livelihoods for many people, such activities should not come at the expense of public safety or the integrity of critical infrastructure.
Authorities are expected to take appropriate steps to protect the affected bridge and ensure that similar incidents do not occur elsewhere.
