Police arrest two suspected ritualists over possession of human skull in Oyo
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspected ritualists over the alleged unlawful possession of an item suspected to be a human skull in Ijio in Iwajowa Local Government Area of the state
The arrest followed a joint intelligence-led operation with the Oyo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to the statement, the operation was launched after the police received credible intelligence on the activities of a suspect allegedly in possession of an item suspected to be a human skull.
Olayinka said the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, directed a joint operation involving police operatives and personnel of the Amotekun Corps, leading to the arrest of one Shittu Isah of Kajola Area, Ijio.
He said the suspected human skull was recovered during the operation and taken into police custody as an exhibit.
“During interrogation, Shittu Isah confessed to having exhumed the suspected human skull from a Muslim burial ground in Ijio.
“He further confessed that he did not act alone, a development that led to the arrest of one Tunde Ajibade, who is currently assisting the police with ongoing investigations,” the statement read.
The police said the recovered exhibit had been preserved for forensic examination to determine its nature.
The command added that investigators were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence, determine the motive and identify any other persons connected with the case.
Olayinka reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
He also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to prevent and combat crime across the state.
The command advised members of the public to report emergencies through its toll-free response line.
