APC Party Postpones Kwara Governorship Primary Election To Friday
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Abdulwaheed Olawale Babatunde.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has postponed its governorship primary election earlier scheduled to hold on Thursday, May 21, 2026, to Friday, May 22, 2026.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Abdulwaheed Olawale Babatunde.
According to the statement, all members of the party across the state were informed that the exercise would no longer hold as initially planned, although no reason was officially given for the postponement.
The statement read, “The Governorship Primary Election earlier scheduled for today, Thursday, 21st May 2026, has been rescheduled to Friday, 22nd May.”
The party also appealed to members, aspirants, and supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding ahead of the rescheduled primary election.
“The party urges all members, aspirants, and the general public to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding in their conduct,” he added.
Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that suspected political thugs and cultists allegedly loyal to a governorship aspirant in the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Kwara State on Thursday surrounded the party’s state secretariat in Ilorin, and blocked Senator Musiliu Obanikoro.
The hoodlums, who arrived in large numbers during the ongoing APC governorship primary election, surrounded the secretariat while chanting war songs and threatening violence unless their preferred aspirant emerged victorious in the exercise.
A video obtained by SaharaReporters captured some of the suspected thugs chanting in Yoruba, “No Yahaya Seriki-Gambari, no vote,” in what appeared to be an open show of support for APC governorship aspirant Seriki-Gambari.
Meanwhile, the atmosphere around the secretariat reportedly became increasingly tense as the group blocked movements in and out of the premises, causing panic among party officials and delegates participating in the primary process.
Senator Obanikoro, who was appointed by the APC leadership to supervise the Kwara governorship primary, was reportedly trapped inside the secretariat amid fears that violence could erupt at any moment.
“Obanikoro is in Kwara to supervise the primary election but he was waylaid by thugs chanting ‘no Seriki-Gambari, no vote,’” an eyewitness said.
Security operatives, including personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, were said to have been deployed to the area to restore order and disperse the crowd.
Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters that security agencies struggled to contain the situation as the suspected thugs continued chanting and making threatening remarks around the secretariat.
