My wife has been bedridden for 4years – blind retired local government worker cries out over unpaid salary arrears

Ejeh Emmanuel, a retired worker of Ohimini Local Government Area in Benue State, who has been blind since retirement, has appealed for urgent intervention over unpaid salary arrears dating back to 2017.

Mr Ejeh, who served as an assistant and unit supervisor in Ohimini LGA from 1998 to 2019, said he was unaware when payments for the April–May 2017 period were made.

“Even my wife has been bedridden for three, four years now,” he said. “I have been struggling to take care of her, and I counted on my rightful entitlements to support her treatment and our family. I was not informed when they paid April and May of 2017.

“But when I heard of it, I went to the LGA headquarters to be told by an accountant that I am not qualified. I argued with him that I served from 1998 uninterruptedly to 2019. What type of qualification do I need again to be paid areas that others have been paid?”

He added that the accountant initially acknowledged his eligibility but later told him, “‘The money has been returned back to your colleague. You should be patient. I will go down to your colleague and collect your money for you.’ From January 2025 till March 2026, I heard nothing. When I later went back, he told me that my name is not in the voucher totally. So now, my situation is helpless.”

Mr. Ejeh described the ordeal as “frustrating and painful,” saying, “I devoted over twenty years of my life to serving my community faithfully, yet now I cannot access what is rightfully mine. I feel abandoned and ignored.”

He further appealed to the authorities, saying, “I am calling on the relevant government officials to look into my case urgently. I am not asking for charity; I am asking for what I have earned honestly through years of service.”

Ejeh Emmanuel is now seeking help from the public and authorities alike.

“I am now seeking intervention from all kind-hearted citizens to assist me so that my areas will be paid, to empower me to seek medical service and take care of my family,” he pleaded.

“I am blind, my wife is bedridden, and I have no other source of income. Please, I beg for justice and compassion.”
