JUST IN: CAF considers postponing 2027 Africa Cup of Nations to 2028

The Confederation of African Football is reportedly considering postponing the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations to 2028, a decision expected to be discussed at an emergency executive committee meeting scheduled for Friday, February 13, 2026, in Dar es Salaam.

The tournament was originally awarded to Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania under the joint “Pamoja 2027” bid, marking the first AFCON to be co-hosted by three nations. The event was scheduled for June–July 2027 and seen as a landmark moment for East African football.

However, sources indicate that two main factors are driving the proposed postponement: infrastructure readiness concerns and CAF’s broader calendar reforms, which include shifting AFCON to a four-year cycle beginning in 2028 and introducing an annual African Nations League from 2029.

The rumor mill suggests AFCON 2027, scheduled to be hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, could be pushed to 2028.

Technical inspection teams have been dispatched to the host nations this week to assess whether the three countries can deliver the necessary infrastructure across ten host cities for a 24-team tournament by the original deadline.

While Kenya has reported progress at the 60,000-seat Talanta Sports Stadium, noting the facility is over 80 per cent complete with a targeted March 2026 handover, CAF remains concerned about overall regional readiness.
