According to reports, Canada has implemented major revisions to its visa and immigration policies, significantly impacting international students, foreign workers, entrepreneurs, and professionals seeking to study, work, or relocate to the country. The new rules are designed to streamline entry for qualified applicants while tightening certain previously available pathways.
One of the notable changes is the suspension of new permanent residence applications under the Start-Up Visa Programme. Individuals who already hold a valid commitment certificate from a designated organization may continue to apply until June 2026, while work permits under the scheme are now limited to existing holders.
In a move aimed at reducing barriers for foreign-trained professionals, applicants are no longer required to demonstrate Canadian work experience under the Ontario Employment Standards Act. This change, effective from January 1, 2026, facilitates access for professionals without prior Canadian employment.
Under Ontario’s “As of Right” framework, qualified professionals can now begin work within 10 business days once their credentials are approved by the relevant regulatory body. This accelerated entry applies to sectors including healthcare, engineering, electrical work, and architecture.
Additionally, foreign workers seeking permanent settlement in Alberta may benefit from the Rural Renewal Stream, which enables rural communities to endorse candidates for local job opportunities, with the potential for nomination for permanent residence.

Postgraduate international students enrolled in public institutions for master’s or doctoral programs are now exempt from providing a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter when applying for a study permit, a requirement previously introduced to regulate applications.
Experts note that these changes are expected to simplify processes for qualified applicants, positioning Canada as an increasingly accessible destination for education and skilled migration.
