Retired United States Army Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, a former National Security Advisor, has called on President Donald Trump to shut down the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), accusing the powerful spy agency of operating against the interests of the American people.
Flynn made the call on Sunday in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, where he alleged that the CIA exists primarily to protect itself rather than to ensure U.S. national security.
According to him, the agency no longer serves the interests of Americans or the safety of the United States.
“That agency exists for itself and not for the benefit of the American people nor for the security of the United States,” Flynn wrote.
The former security chief further referenced the late President John F. Kennedy, echoing a long-standing conspiracy-laden critique of the CIA’s influence in U.S. politics and foreign policy.
“President JFK was right,” Flynn stated, quoting Kennedy’s oft-cited remark: “The CIA should have been split into a million pieces and scattered to the winds.”
Flynn urged immediate action, tagging the president and other senior political figures in his post.
“Mr. @POTUS @realDonaldTrump SHUT IT DOWN NOW!!! he wrote, also tagging Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and Vice President JD Vance.
Flynn served as the 24th U.S. National Security Advisor for the first 22 days of President Trump’s administration, resigning after reports surfaced that he had misled officials about his conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States, Sergey Kislyak.
His military career was marked by significant roles in shaping U.S. counterterrorism strategy and dismantling insurgent networks during the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, as well as numerous senior intelligence assignments across combat arms, conventional forces, and special operations.
In July 2012, Flynn was appointed the 18th Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, a position he held until his mandatory retirement from the military in August 2014.
