Tambuwal Reveals Tinubu’s Secret Undemocratic Deal With Governors In 2023
Former governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Tambuwal alleges that president Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023 had an undemocratic deal with state-governors which he aims to replicate in 2027 general elections.
Aminu Tambuwal, one of the leaders of the opposition coalition party-African Democratic Congress (ADC) made the allegation in an interview with Channels Tv. He claims that the president Tinubu’s secret deal with state-governors in 2023 resulted in his influencing supreme court judgements on cases challenging the governors’ electoral victories. Hence, these state-governors feel obligated to the president and believe that their reelection in 2027 is secure if they align with president Bola Ahmed by joining his party.
“I mean this is what they started when cases were at the supreme court. We were aware that the presidency was involved in midwifing the process whereby every governor was returned even where there were clear cases of injustice, miscarriage of justice. All the governors who had cases at the supreme court; it was clearly negotiated and then the intervention of president Bola Ahmed Tinubu made them to continue and that is why they feel morally obliged in the manner of I owe–because that was the deal for them to join his part”.
Former governor Tambuwal thereafter accuses the state-governors of being willing tools for the destruction of Nigeria’s democracy. He reminisced how he defected from the ruling party to the opposition party while he was Sokoto state governor to challenge former president Muhammadu Buhari’s administration’s underperformance. He added that the current state-governors of the federation believe that aligning with president Bola Ahmed Tinubu would result in the 2027 elections being manipulated in their favour. He declared that the opposition party is ready to resist election rigging in 2027 and that the 2027 general elections must be free and fair.
“That is not democracy, that is not politics. And when governors are defecting, I defected as a governor but I didn’t defect to president Buhari’s political party even though I am from the northwest. Out of my conviction that his administration was failing, I left and joined the opposition in an attempt to reestablish clear proper democratic governance in Nigeria. But when I see governors running away from their political parties simply because they want to go and align with the government at the centre and belong to the centre because they believe they are going to write results for them. It’s bullshit. No body is going to write any results this time around. We are ready and prepared to go through electoral process that must be free and fair. Any attempt to write any results will be resisted–lawfully and constitutionally”.
