Nigeria’s 2025 federal budget continues to prioritize national security as one of its most critical pillars. With ongoing challenges such as insurgency, banditry, militancy, and evolving threats across the country, the defence sector once again receives substantial funding aimed at strengthening military capacity, enhancing training, and modernizing equipment.
According to BudgIT, a total of ₦3.10 trillion has been allocated to the nation’s defence architecture in 2025. Below is a closer look at how this massive figure is distributed among key institutions and security formations.
1. Nigerian Army – ₦1.48 trillion
The Nigerian Army retains the largest share of the defence budget, reflecting its central role in frontline operations across the country. The allocation will fund personnel costs, equipment procurement, welfare packages, training, logistics, and expansion of special operations units. Given the Army’s heavy involvement in counterterrorism and internal security, this portion is expected to support ongoing operations in the North East, North West, and other flashpoints.
2. Nigerian Navy – ₦442.52 billion
As illegal bunkering, piracy, and maritime insecurity persist within Nigeria’s coastal waters and the Gulf of Guinea, the Navy receives significant funding to bolster surveillance, enhance seagoing capabilities, and improve operational readiness. This allocation is expected to cover fleet maintenance, purchase of patrol vessels, and training to protect Nigeria’s maritime economic interests—especially crude oil and gas infrastructure.
3. Nigerian Air Force – ₦376.78 billion
The Air Force continues to play a critical support role through aerial surveillance, precision strikes, and logistics operations. The 2025 budget will aid aircraft maintenance, acquisition of new platforms, procurement of weapons, and improved air intelligence systems. With the rising dependence on airpower in counterinsurgency operations, this funding is essential for strengthening Nigeria’s air dominance.
4. Nigerian Defence Academy – ₦37.15 billion
The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), the premier institution responsible for training future military officers, receives ₦37.15 billion. This funding will support academic programs, infrastructure development, cadet welfare, and research. As modern warfare evolves rapidly, enhancing the quality of military education remains vital.
5. National Defence College – ₦26.58 billion
The National Defence College (NDC), which focuses on senior-level military strategy and national security training, receives ₦26.58 billion. The allocation underscores the government’s commitment to high-level policy and leadership development within the armed forces and allied security institutions.
6. Defence Research and Development Bureau – ₦10.6 billion
With global militaries increasingly shifting toward indigenous production of defence assets, Nigeria’s Defence Research and Development Bureau receives ₦10.6 billion to deepen innovation and reduce reliance on foreign equipment. This is expected to enhance local manufacturing of drones, communication systems, and other military technologies.
