Northern, Hausa Christians Petition Tinubu, AGF Fagbemi Over Alleged Denial of Appointments
The Arewa Christians and Indigenous Pastors Association (ACIPA) has written an open letter to President Bola Tinubu and Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), alleging that Christians from the North — especially Hausa Christians — continue to face discrimination in federal and state appointments, as well as in employment and scholarships.
In the letter signed by Dr. Luke Shehu, ACIPA’s Chairman, the group expressed concern that qualified Northern Christians were being sidelined in favour of less-qualified candidates during recruitment and appointment exercises.
The association cited a recent case where a Christian candidate from the North East, who reportedly scored 83% in an interview for the post of Permanent Secretary, was overlooked, while another candidate who scored 54% was allegedly chosen instead.
This is yet another example of systemic persecution and denial of rights faced by Northern Christians and indigenous people, particularly in states like Jigawa, Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, and Kebbi, the group stated.
ACIPA described the development as a travesty of justice, urging the government to review the process and ensure fairness in the selection of candidates.
As advocates of peace, unity, and social justice, we call on authorities to correct this abnormality immediately. The ongoing marginalization of Northern Christians is no longer acceptable,” the letter added.
The group appealed to religious and civic leaders to speak up against what it called a systematic denial of opportunities, while reaffirming its commitment to national peace and unity.
