Lagos Shifts $3 Billion Green Line Rail Project to December 2025 — To Link Marina, Lekki, and Epe Corridors
The Lagos State Government has announced a shift in the commencement date of the much-anticipated $3 billion Green Line Rail Project to December 2025, marking a key adjustment in one of the state’s flagship transportation initiatives.
The state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the new timeline in a statement posted on the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Lagos State Government on Monday. The commissioner had earlier, in April, stated that the project’s construction would begin before the end of 2025.
According to Osiyemi, the 70-kilometre Green Line will run from Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, featuring 17 stations across both elevated and at-grade tracks. The route will begin at Marina, traverse Victoria Island, merge with the Lekki–Epe Expressway, and continue through Ajah, Sangotedo, and the Lekki Free Zone.
When completed, the Green Line will provide a modern, high-capacity transit option linking central Lagos to the fast-developing Lekki corridor, significantly reducing travel time and easing congestion on major routes.
The project, first conceived in 1983, will be implemented in phases, with the first phase covering the stretch from Lekki First Tollgate to Epe, while the second phase, beginning at Marina, will include an on-water segment, a unique engineering feature in the state’s evolving urban transport network.
Officials say the project is expected to take two to three years to complete once construction begins, reinforcing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to expanding Lagos’ integrated transportation system.
