Fresh Flood Hits Mokwa As Niger State Still Reels From Over 200 Deaths In Last Tragedy
Residents raised the alarm on Monday, saying that water levels had begun rising again in the same area, which was still struggling to recover from the last tragedy.
Afresh flood has hit Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, just weeks after a similar disaster claimed the lives of over 200 people.

SaharaReporters learnt that the flash flood is a result of the downpour that happened on Sunday.
“Another flood is here again; it started not long ago,” a resident told SaharaReporters, expressing fear of more damage.
The recent flooding had left many displaced and farmlands destroyed. Locals are now pleading for immediate intervention from the Niger State government and relevant agencies to prevent another large-scale humanitarian crisis.
Director General Niger state Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) Hussaini Ibrahim was not available for comment as at the time of filing the report.
SaharaReporters had earlier reported that flooding in the Mokwa area of Niger State on May 29 resulted in the death of over 200 people.
The incident also led to the displacement of thousands of persons.
Eyewitnesses recently described a harrowing scene as bodies were seen in various parts of the town.
Many families have been displaced, while others continue to search for missing loved ones.
SaharaReporters’ earlier review of the budget performance documents for Niger State showed that a sum of N5.7 billion was spent on honorarium and sitting allowances by the state between January 2024 and March 2025.
The state, however, spent less on erosion and flood control during the same period.
In 2024, honorarium and sitting allowances gulped N4.813 billion, while between January and March 2025, N949.2 million was spent on the same purpose. In total, the state spent N5.762 billion on honorarium and sitting allowances between January 2024 and March 2025.
In contrast, a sum of N5.1 billion was spent on erosion and flood control between January 2024 and March 2025. The amount is broken down into N2.9 billion spent between January and March 2025, and N2.2 billion between January and December 2024.
Further review shows that in 2024, the state and its local governments received N3.208 billion as ecological funds.
The funds are forms of support to states and their local governments to tackle issues such as flooding.
The amounts received (total by Niger State and its LGAs) are broken down as follows: December – N394 million, November – N270 million, October – N273 million, September – N234 million, August – N273 million, July – N304 million, June – N236 million, May – N255 million, April – N223 million, March – N229 million, February – N277 million, and January – N250 million.
